Global Asylum Governance and Bangladesh’s RefugeePolicies: Lessons from Rohingya Refugee Management
A Regional Workshop on Global Asylum Governance and Bangladesh’s Refugee Policies: Lessons from Rohingya Refugee Management and a Task Force Meeting of the ASILE project were held on November 30 – December 1, 2022 at Hotel Lake Castle, Gulshan 2, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The events, hosted by the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh (UoD), were jointly organized by the Faculty of Law, UoD and the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS). The events successfully harnessed the enthusiasm and experience of distinguished participants from different relevant fields including academia, UN agencies and NGOs.
The event comprised the inaugural session which was followed by three panel discussions. The inaugural session started with the introductory remarks by Professor Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, Professor of the Department of Law, University of Dhaka, who was one of the two researchers of the ASILE project’s Bangladesh component. This was followed by the introductory speech of Dr. Sergio Carrera, Senior Research Fellow and Head of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Unit of Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and ASILE Project Coordinator who gave a brief introduction of the project. In his introduction, Sergio highlighted the objective of the project as to provide the cutting edge of academic knowledge, promising practices and a collection of evidence-based tools for the development of future asylum policies; European Union’s role in this respect; and the composition of the network of ASILE project. The inaugural session ended with the welcome speech by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. Shima Zaman who welcomed all for attending the program, expressed her concerns to the Rohingya refugee crisis and reflected on her expectations from the panel sessions.
